Olympic superstar and NHL All-Star Theo Fleury share his harrowing story of abuse in a powerful speech about the need to start a conversation about trauma and mental health.
Theo Fleury talk about 13 years ago he had fully loaded pistol in his mouth only because he was exhausted living on emotional pain and suffering. His life was mess since childhood, his parents were drug addicted and later joining to NHL in childhood, at the age of 14, he was raped 150 times by a coach.
He was devastated because he was molested and he did not sleep for 27 years because of this fear. Later he got addicted to sex, drugs and other habits just to overcome from this trauma but it did not work well for him. His passion and used to love play hockey so he joined and became one of famous NHL player in the world.
After he retired from hockey he wrote a book called Playing Fire with no expectation and then he went to Toronto for first sign and there around 400 people showed up to buy this book and he saw one of the guy saying him “Me TOO” and gradually the book sold out more and more and it reached around five thousand and all those people who bought the book said me “ME TOO ME TOO”
There are thousands or even more people who face same trauma, torture and other horrifying things with them but cannot tell anyone and hide them from people.
Trauma and sexual abuse are two of our most pressing human and societal problems. They must be studied by unbiased scientific investigation rather than polarized by hysteria and politics.
